EFE\/EPA\/HOW HWEE YOUNG\n\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"media-content-img\" style=\"margin-bottom: 20px\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At 7.22 am local time (19:22 GMT Wednesday) police received multiple emergency calls about a person discharging a firearm inside the third floor of a building under construction on Auckland\u2019s waterfront.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police \u201centered the building within ten minutes\u201d and the offender \u201cmade his way up through the building site, discharging his firearm on multiple occasions\u201d as people scattered and hid, while some were evacuated, Police Commissioner Andrew Coster said at a livestreamed press conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;At around 8am, our Armed Offenders Squad, supported by Special Tactics group, located the offender inside a lift shaft, where he has barricaded himself, and attempted to engage him&#8230; The offender fired at police, injuring an officer,\u201d Coster said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Shots were exchanged, and the offender was later found deceased. Tragically, police located two members of the public deceased on the lower levels of the building site.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"media-content-video\" style=\"margin-bottom: 20px\"><div style=\"width: 640px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-560865-1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" poster=\"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rss-efe1f17152a-95bb-4036-b698-b4ab7bead22f.jpg\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rss-efe1f17152a-95bb-4036-b698-b4ab7bead22f-hd-web.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rss-efe1f17152a-95bb-4036-b698-b4ab7bead22f-hd-web.mp4\">https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rss-efe1f17152a-95bb-4036-b698-b4ab7bead22f-hd-web.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At an earlier press conference, a visibly upset Prime Minister Chris Hipkins confirmed with \u201cdeep sorrow\u201d that two people had been killed and six injured, including the police officer.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The officer was taken to hospital in critical condition, but had since stabilized and was expected to undergo surgery.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">St. John Ambulance manager Stuart Cockburn said the service assessed and treated 10 patients \u2013 seven of which were gunshot related and taken to hospital, and three with minor other injuries who were released. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The alleged offender was identified a 24-year-old who worked at the building site and police believe his motivation was connected to his employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coster added that the unnamed man was on home detention with an exemption to work at the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the offender used a shotgun, which was not illegal, but that he did not have a firearms license to use it. Police had previously searched his property and never found him in possession of a firearm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rss-efe81685909dffb6ec80fb108d6fd3446d56340de78w.jpg\" alt=\"Police stand guard at a cordoned off area near the site of a shooting, in Queen Street, Auckland, New Zealand, 20 July 2023. EFE\/EPA\/HOW HWEE YOUNG\n\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"media-content-img\" style=\"margin-bottom: 20px\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An investigation has been launched, but police assured that it was an isolated incident with no risk to national security, while Hipkins said there was no ideological or political motivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man had a \u201cprimarily family violence history\u201d and \u201csome indications of mental health history,\u201d Coster said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The shooting occurred hours before the opening ceremony of the Fifa Women&#8217;s World Cup in New Zealand and Australia, and the first match of the tournament, in which New Zealand faces Norway at Auckland\u2019s Eden Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hipkins said the tournament &#8220;will take place as planned.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFIFA extends its deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims who lost their lives following the incident which occurred this morning in Auckland, New Zealand, and our thoughts and prayers remain with those who have been injured in this tragic incident,\u201d Fifa said in a statement.
