If necessary, a second round or ballot of the presidential elections would be held on this last date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Salvadorans will elect 44 mayors and municipal councils, instead of 242, after Congress approved a law to reorganize the territorial division of the country, presented and promoted by President Bukele.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, they must vote for 60 deputies instead of 84, this also after the approval of a regulation promoted by the president. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/rss-efe5818c67ea02ebde1bcb6dd4b228301fa4e89d121w.jpg\" alt=\"Unions, civil society organizations, students and human rights representatives march in commemoration of International Labor Day, in San Salvador, El Salvador, on May 1, 2023, with this sign reading &quot;No to the re-election of the dictator.&quot; EFE FILE\/Rodrigo Sura\n\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Unions, civil society groups, students and human rights representatives march in commemoration of International Labor Day, in San Salvador, El Salvador, on May 1, 2023, with this sign reading &#8220;No to the re-election of the dictator.&#8221; EFE FILE\/Rodrigo Sura<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Political parties can now register their candidates for president and vice president until Oct. 26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is unknown when the ruling party, Nuevas Ideas (NI), will present documentation to register Bukele and current Vice President F\u00e9lix Ulloa as its candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In September 2021, the NI-appointed judges in the constitutional chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice ruled that the president can serve two consecutive terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United States embassy in El Salvador condemned the ruling as unconstitutional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year Bukele announced his intention to run again, making him the first president of the Salvadoran democratic stage with the option to seek immediate re-election. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) issued a statement on Wednesday in which it said that Salvadorans will go to the polls \u201cas the rule of law and human rights violations in El Salvador deteriorate.
