{"id":88268,"date":"2022-09-23T17:52:58","date_gmt":"2022-09-23T15:52:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/?p=88268"},"modified":"2022-09-23T17:53:21","modified_gmt":"2022-09-23T15:53:21","slug":"the-guardians-of-the-amazon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/en\/other-news\/2022-09-23\/the-guardians-of-the-amazon\/","title":{"rendered":"The guardians of the Amazon"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Paula Bayarte<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Puerto Maldonado, Peru, Sep 23 (EFE).- Mario Yumbato worked in an oil company for 20 years until he decided to return to his nature roots and become a forest ranger in the Peruvian Amazon.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 52-year-old, originally from Iquitos, a small port city and the gateway to the jungle villages of the northern Amazon, grew up in the forest.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, he works as a forest ranger for Arbio, a Peruvian non-profit organization that takes care of 916 hectares of Amazon rainforest (2264 acres) in the Las Piedras River basin, Madre de Dios.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mario\u2019s profession, which requires him to live in the middle of the jungle, combines ancestral knowledge with specialized monitoring technology to preserve the Amazonian flora and fauna far from civilization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a machete in his hand, he walks around the forest naming all kinds of plants, recognizing the sounds of the hundreds of different bird species and magically finding the almost invisible footprints of animals that have set foot in the forest.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/amazon-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-88274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/amazon-2.jpeg 900w, https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/amazon-2-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/amazon-2-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/amazon-2-430x286.jpeg 430w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><figcaption><em>Forest ranger Mario Yumbato walking in the Amazon forest holding a machete. EFE\/Paolo Aguilar<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Mario has inherited most of his knowledge from his childhood, which goes hand in hand with the technological tools he has been provided to safeguard the forest in which he grew up in.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mario and his partner Majo Canel\u00f3n take turns to go once a month to the city of Puerto Maldonado, which is a four-hour journey away, to buy food and hygiene products.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When one of them leaves, it is not the loneliness or poisonous snakes they are afraid of.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are afraid of being kidnapped or of being killed. We are scared of being assaulted because they know that we are telling the truth or have filed complaints, that is our daily fear,&#8221; Majo tells Efe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The forest ranger is referring to the illegal gangs mining for gold in the Amazon forest.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou never know how these people might react,\u201d she says, adding that they are often armed with weapons.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI only had my notes and my camera and they had guns, we had to explain to them that they couldn&#8217;t be there,\u201d Majo says, referring to an episode when she met one of these criminal gangs in the middle of the forest.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/amazon-3-.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-88277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/amazon-3-.jpeg 900w, https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/amazon-3--300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/amazon-3--768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/pre.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/amazon-3--430x286.jpeg 430w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><figcaption><em>Forest rangers\u00a0 Mario Yumbato and Majo Canel\u00f3n in Madre de Dios in the Peruvian Amazon. EFE\/Paolo Aguilar<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>But for Yuri Caceres, who has been working as a forest ranger for ten years, the danger is worth it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf there were no rangers, the whole area would be full of illegal activities and the new generations would no longer know of some of the animals,\u201d he tells Efe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yuri admits that he has tried to work in the city several times, but always ends up back in the forest.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m not much of an office person,\u201d he says.
