San Salvador, Feb 2 (EFE).- President of El Salvador Nayib Bukele, who is seeking immediate re-election despite constitutional prohibitions, published a video on social media on Friday violating a court ordered period of electoral silence before Sunday’s polls.<\/p>
The Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE in Spanish) prohibits political propaganda during the threee dayss before an election to allow citizens to reflect on their voting intentions.<\/p>
Despite the ban, Bukele published a two-minute video posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account. <\/p>
“There is still so much to be done. We are building and improving schools all over the country. Step by step, we have solved the most urgent problems, but we also need to lay the foundations for our future,” he said.<\/p>
Pre-election silence began at midnight on Feb. 1 and is supposed to last until Feb. 5, with violators facing fines ranging from US$1,142 to US$5,714.<\/p>
The TSE has not publicly commented on any of the political propaganda that the Salvadoran government has been broadcasting on radio, television, and social media since Thursday, highlighting the “achievements” that Bukele has made in various areas, such as education, during his nearly five years in office.<\/p>
According to a recent poll, 32.8% of the population believes that the “main problem El Salvador faces” is its economy, as unemployment has reached 17.3%.<\/p>
Bukele has focused his campaign solely on security, highlighting “the results” of the so-called “war on gangs” and the controversial state of emergency his government has implemented since March 2022 to combat them. EFE<\/p>
