San Salvador, Feb 4 (EFE). – Opposition parties in El Salvador denounced a “series of anomalies” in Sunday’s legislative and presidential elections that seem to favor New Ideas, the party of President Nayib Bukele, who is running for re-election, although the Constitution does not allow consecutive terms.<\/p>
The president of Nationalist Republican Alliance (right), Carlos Saade, denounced in a video on X that the polling stations were set up “only with personnel from New Ideas,” pointing out that the trained citizens with no political affiliation who were supposed to man the tables were left out. <\/p>
He also denounced that government workers at polling stations were “collectively encouraging Salvadorans to vote a certain way,” adding that government workers at polling stations abroad in Salvadoran consulates were also “pressuring voters to vote for the New Ideas.<\/p>
Farabundo Mart\u00ed National Liberation Front’s deputy and congressional candidate Anabel Belloso (left) also claimed that New Ideas, “imposed” its personnel in the polling centers “in complicity with the Supreme Electoral Tribunal and the Attorney General’s Office.<\/p>
“It is not possible so much thuggery,” the parliamentarian added in her X account.<\/p>
Bukele, 42, is the overwhelming favorite in these elections, in which five candidates from opposition parties are also competing, including Arena and the FMLN, with virtually no chance of winning, according to the polls.<\/p>
The politician is the first president in El Salvador’s democratic era to seek immediate re-election. EFE <\/p>
