Washington, Feb 5 (EFE).- House Republican leaders on Monday slamed Senate Republicans’ immigration bill imposing a series of border restrictions, saying it was insufficient.<\/p>
“This bill is even worse than we expected and won’t come close to ending the border disaster the president has created,” House Speaker Mike Johnson said through his X (formerly Twitter) account.<\/p>
After weeks of negotiations involving the White House, the Department of Homeland Security, and a group of senators from both parties, the agreement was made public.<\/p>
It not only enables the imposition of immigration restrictions, but also the approval of new military aid for Ukraine.<\/p>
\u201cAny consideration of this Senate bill in its current form is a waste of time. It is DEAD on arrival in the House. We encourage the US Senate to reject it,\u201d speaker Mike Johnson, majority leader Steve Scalise, whip Tom Emmer and conference chairwoman Elise Stefanik said.<\/p>
The bill allows the federal government to restrict access to asylum if there are 4,000 border crossings per day for seven consecutive days, and it also toughens the requirements for those seeking asylum in the United States. <\/p>
The proposal also included $60 billion in military aid for Ukraine, $14 billion for Israel, $4.8 billion for Taiwan, and $20 billion for border security.<\/p>
The bill is expected to pass a procedural vote in the Democratic-majority Senate this week. If approved in the upper chamber, it will move to the House of Representatives, where Republicans hold a majority. <\/p>
The bill also faces pushback from former President Donald Trump (2017-2021), up for reelection in November. EFE<\/p>
